Will’s Culture Desk: March Edition

With Spring already on the horizon, the Education Team here at Explore & More is looking forward to continuing to provide programs and activities for the many individuals who look to us for guidance in education and play.

This March looks to be very impactful and fun as one of the central focuses for the month is on the topic of mindfulness and health. Explore & More will be hosting yoga and mindfulness classes, discussing healthy food options, and emphasizing the importance of physical fitness. We hope to welcome the not-so-snowy Spring weather by practicing healthy mindsets, choices, and lifestyles, all of which will be emphasized by activities provided by our Education Team members.

Apart from this mental and physical health focus, the Education Team will be sure to present activities that relate to Women’s History Month. We will be centering on women who have greatly contributed to history, in fields like art, science, history, and civil rights. It is our hope that such activities empower local children to be aware of the fight for female equality that took place over centuries and continues today.

Although March is Women’s History Month, here at Explore & More we are actively continuing to focus on topics such as those discussed in Black History Month. As the central focus of our Education Team may change from month to month, our overall educational goals remain constant throughout the year. So please join us for a fun, educational, March!

Explore Even More: Spring Walking Adventure

When you hear the word spring, what do you think of? I think of melting snow, flowers blooming, fresh air, cute critters, and walks outside! Walks are a wonderful way to stay active with your family. At Explore & More we are celebrating spring with a series of health and wellness activities.

Let’s make a simple craft that can help make outdoor walks a little more involved.

Sanity Savers: Binoculars for a Bear Hunt

What you’ll need:
2 Craft tubes
Tape or glue
Extra optional supplies:
Ribbon
Misc. decorations
Markers or crayons

Steps:
1. Decorate your craft tubes. Color them or glue fun craft supplies on them.
2. Attach them together using tape or glue.
3. Attach ribbon with tape or glue at the end if you would like.

Bring your finished binoculars with you on your spring walk. Ask fun questions to help observe the world through your binoculars. “What kind of animals do you see?,” “What kind of colors do you see?.” This can also be a fun activity to incorporate early literacy review. Ask questions like “do you see something that starts with a ‘T’?” “You see a bird? What letter does b-b-b-bird start with?”

Have a happy spring!

Storytime: Kiara Santiago reads Sulwe

Our Black History Month celebration continues with Kiara Santiago, Visitor Experience Specialist at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad, reading Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o. It follows the story of a young girl who wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. The story is ultimately about colorism and learning to love oneself, no matter one’s skin tone.

Dan’s STEM Corner: Artemis Moon Mission

3…2…1…Blast Off!! Right now, NASA is working on getting astronauts back to the Moon. The first mission involves sending an uncrewed spaceship to the Moon and back.  Following that the next step involves sending a crew to orbit the moon and then come back to Earth. Finally on the third step humans will land on the moon for the first time since 1972.  What’s crucial about this landing is, the first female and the first person of color will step foot on the moon during this mission. The entire mission is called Artemis, which in mythology is Apollo’s twin sister. The uncrewed mission is set to launch March 12, so be on the lookout!

Field trips are back! Please be aware that it will be busier than usual.
