summer camps

New for 2021!  Explore & More is pleased to offer an exciting variety of summer camps where kids will have so much fun, they won’t even know they’re learning!

Explore options below for our camps which cater to children from ages 4 to 12!

How Camps Are Changing During Covid-19:

We are so excited to have you join us for Explore & More Summer Camps! Our goal is to not only maintain the high-quality programming you expect from Explore & More but to keep your family safe and healthy while doing so. We’ll be following all guidelines set by the county, state, and CDC—such as reduced group sizes, increased sanitization, and maximized social distancing. The procedures listed below may change based on new information or additional guidance, and we’ll adjust accordingly.

Our team can’t wait to welcome you to Explore & More Summer Camp!

● All Explore & More Summer Camp participants will have their temperature checked upon arrival with a contactless thermometer. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be permitted to stay.

● The adult dropping off the camp participant will still be required to complete a short questionnaire as outlined below in the Health and Hygiene section. A staff member will verbally verify that the adult has read all three questions before signing.

● If a camp participant is sent home because they are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 (including the daily temperature check), they must meet one of the criteria below before they are allowed to return to Explore & More Summer Camps:

○ They have received a negative COVID-19 test (documentation required).

○ They have been cleared to return by their pediatrician (documentation required).

● Symptoms of COVID-19 which will trigger the above protocols include the following:

○ Fever (100.4 °F or higher) or chills

○ Cough

○ Nasal congestion or runny nose

○ New loss of taste or smell

○ Sore throat

○ Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

○ Diarrhea

○ Nausea or vomiting

○ Stomachache

○ Fatigue

○ Headache

○ Muscle or body aches

○ Poor appetite

HEALTH AND HYGIENE

● Each day at drop-off, the adult who is dropping off the camp participant will be required to complete a short questionnaire certifying that the following statements are true for the last 14 days:

○ The camp participant has not exhibited any symptoms of COVID-19.

○ The camp participant has not tested positive for COVID-19

○ The camp participant has not knowingly been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

● Staff will undergo the same daily health screening listed above.

● Anyone with a fever or symptoms of illness will not be permitted to stay.

● If any participant develops a fever or symptoms of illness, they will be isolated, and a caregiver will be contacted for immediate pick-up. Cleaning protocols will be enacted for any areas they visited.

● Anyone who is sick will be required to remain at home.

● If a positive case of COVID-19 is identified, Explore & More Summer Camp families will be immediately informed. We will follow directions and protocols set by the Department of Health and Explore & More leadership—which may include temporary closure of the program.

● Everyone will be required to wear masks unless all group participants are seated and socially distanced (i.e., mealtimes). At the direction of staff, participants will be able to remove their masks when social distancing can be practiced safely.

● Staff are trained to implement and encourage youth to follow healthy hygiene practices:

○ Everyone will engage in frequent, regular hand washing.

○ Hand sanitizer will be available in all classrooms and areas within the museum.

○ Staff are required to wear appropriate PPE.

○ Staff will monitor for hygiene and signs of illness throughout the day.

GROUPS AND CLASSROOMS

● Group sizes will be kept small (approximately 15 campers; will vary depending on the size of the classroom) in accordance with New York State and CDC recommendations. Groups will remain separated to reduce intermixing between groups.

● We will implement an increased plan for sanitizing and cleaning all classroom surfaces, supplies, and exhibit areas. Classroom environments will be adjusted to maximize social distancing and minimize shared supplies. Any shared supplies will be sanitized between use.

● We will not serve any food, including snacks. We will maintain a designated lunch time, allow for snack breaks, and facilitate hand washing and social distancing during all mealtimes. Please make sure to pack a lunch, snack, and water bottle for your camper (no refrigeration available).

● Only campers, staff, and volunteers will be permitted in classrooms.

Hands-on cooking lessons are built into the daily schedule. This isn’t your typical make-pizza-bagels-and-ice-cream-sundaes kiddie “cooking” class, either.  As an added bonus, this camp features “Passport to the World Club Camp” hosted by Patti Green. The program will highlight a different country each of the five camp days, highlighting traditional foods and recipes.  Each cooking class, approximately 75-90 minutes will be built into our daily camp schedule or you may participate in this portion virtually. During this week-long camp, all of the ingredients are pre-measured and included for campers to learn about how people live in different places around the world!

Kids will learn how to care for a plant from growing to harvesting, then they’ll take the day’s produce and make a healthy dish. As an added bonus, this camp features the “Farm to Table Program” hosted by Patti Green. The combined virtual and in-person program is approximately 75-90 minutes each day throughout the week, and it will be built into our daily camp schedule or you may participate in this portion virtually. We’ll participate in virtual field trips with local farmers and participate in hands-on cooking experiences highlighting local fresh seasonal ingredients. A little gardening here, a little cooking there, and your child will get experience in organic farming as well as how to prepare different types of vegetables. Don’t worry: There’s plenty of time for play inside Explore & More Museum, hikes around Canalside, games, arts and crafts, too. Sign them up for Farm to Fork Camp, and they’ll come back with an advanced palate and a thumb greener than yours. Think of it as an investment in your family’s mealtime future.

Together to Kindergarten

We know summer is just starting, but it is never too early to start preparing for school! In September, many children will be “leaving the nest” and going off on their own for the first time. No, we are not talking about going to college. We’re talking about little ones going to Kindergarten! For many kids, this will be the first time they spend away from their parents for an extended period. At Together to Kindergarten, young campers are set up for success by providing fun and educational activities based on the following Kindergarten Readiness Skill-Builders: fine motor skills (cutting, writing, using manipulatives for small motor tasks), large motor skills (large group games, balancing, climbing), social/emotional skills (socializing, making new friends, taking turns, sharing, good manners), language skills (speaking in a whole group setting, asking for assistance), reading skills (rhyming, recognizing patterns in stories, print awareness), and math skills (counting, patterning, measuring). Campers will get used to “school” routines and separating from parents while playing and learning in the various Play Zones at Explore & More. Campers will need to provide a snack and a water bottle daily.

Ages: 4 – 5 (entering Kindergarten in September 2021)

Date: Monday, August 23rd – Friday, August 27th

Two Sessions:
9:00am-11:30am, Cost: $150

Invention Exchange

Just imagine all that you can invent! Campers will learn skills in electronics, robotics, and fabrication to create useful, fun, and silly inventions to solve a series of challenges. After building foundational skills, makers will explore the entire design process to invent their own independent project. Your child will learn while having fun!
