Every “Body” Can Play: Planning Summer Fun

By Silvia Steele

Summer is here! Whether your family enjoys going on new outdoor adventures or spending time at a familiar neighborhood playground, WNY has many options to consider. Planning ahead when venturing somewhere new is key if your child will need accommodations or has accessibility needs. At Explore & More you can call ahead 716-655-5131 Ext. 7081 or email [email protected] if you have any questions about accommodations when planning your visit to the museum. You can check out our calendar of events, here, for special summer museum programming and fun outdoor activities with our community partners at Canalside. Below are resources to help you and your family have a safe and fun summer.

Join us at Explore & More for our signature Touch a Truck event, sponsored by M&T Bank on July 30th from 10 AM – 1 PM. There will be a quiet hour from 10 AM – 11 AM so families can enjoy a more sensory-friendly experience without the sound of engines or horns!

Our friends at Parent Network have put together a 2023 Recreation and Leisure Services Directory for families. The directory includes inclusive venues and programming throughout WNY.

Parent Network has a growing list of inclusive playgrounds in WNY on their website, here, including an indoor playground at Explore & More!

  • Scripted Stories, visual schedules and choice boards are a great way to prepare your child for an outing especially when visiting somewhere new. You can create your own visuals specific to your outing or look for social stories online. Autism Little Learners has a “summer vacation” social story, here, to help with the transition to a summer schedule. The National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (NCPMI) has a resource library including instructions on how to create a visual schedule for home routines, here.

Field trips are back! Please be aware that it will be busier than usual.
