Au-Some Evening

August 12 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 5:30 pm on day Second of the month, repeating until November 11, 2022

Free

Once a month, our special Au-Some Evenings give children with autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing disorder, their friends and family an opportunity to play and learn together in an understanding and supportive environment. Families will have access to the museum space and play zones, including our cafe. Featured activities include a music center, therapy dogs, art projects and gross motor activities. Explore & More will also have a social narrative about the new museum and its play zones, quiet kits, as well as calming sensory-friendly spaces in the museum.

This month’s Au-Some Evening is particularly special for us as we celebrate the life of Sara Rogers, our dear teacher, and friend who left this world too soon.

In honor of Miss Sara we will have scarves and maracas for everyone to take home and keep her playful, musical spirit with them. We’ll also have musical instruments available for children to play, a parachute on the Terrace (weather permitting), and videos and music of Sara to sing along to in the Tinkering Tank.

To help young minds grasp the difficult concept of death and loss of their teacher and friend, Kathy Doody and Jana Mertz have put together a social narrative. Please review it before reading it to your children to assess whether you feel it is appropriate for them, developmentally and emotionally.

To register for the next Au-Some Evening please email [email protected] or call (716)655-5131 ext. 3.

Au-Some Evenings are brought to us through the generous support of Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.

Au-Some Evenings are also supported by J.M. McDonald Foundation, Maria Love Convalescent Fund, and Erie County
