DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

POSITION REPORTS TO

Chief Executive Officer

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Finance is an integral part of the Senior Leadership Team of the Museum. The incumbent has responsibility and decision-making authority for the overall management of the Museum, including its physical, human, technological and financial resources.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP

  • Provides the leadership, vision and long-range strategic planning for the Museum’s financial stability, including budgeting, forecasting, monitoring and reporting.
  • Identifies opportunities for increasing revenue and reducing expenses.
  • As a member of the Executive Team, provide value-added contributions to the Team, promoting cooperation and integration of all functional areas.
  • Adopt “best in class” practices for finance and model the approach for interactions across the organization.

 

FINANCE

  • Directs all financial and managerial accounting functions. Identifies opportunities for increasing revenue and reducing expenses. Champions and ensures financial integrity.
  • Leads annual Museum-wide operating budget preparation for each department, and capital budget.
  • Oversees the preparation of monthly financial reports and analyses for the Board of Trustees and its sub-committees.
  • Works with Director of Advancement to produce financial needs analyses as a basis for fundraising planning.
  • Develops and monitors internal control policies and procedures, ensures compliance with all federal and state financial reporting requirements, ensures compliance with contract guidelines.
  • In conjunction with outsourced human resources firm, monitors payroll and benefits administration.
  • Ensures that all tax filings are accurate and timely.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Develop and document all policies and procedures relevant to finance and accounting.

TALENT MANAGEMENT

In addition to Museum-wide responsibilities noted above:

  • Leads the Finance team, to include providing career development, objective and measurable goals, knowledge growth, objective and timely feedback and counseling.
  • Instills in the Team an appreciation of the Museum’s mission, a passion for promoting it, and line-of-site awareness to their role in the success of the organization.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

In addition to Museum-wide responsibilities noted above:

  • Prepare, monitor, and adhere to annual budgets for all areas under span of control.
  • Develop, monitor, analyze and adhere to metrics that objectively measure success and opportunity for continuous quality improvement in the Finance area.
  • Provide transparent feedback to staff, Executive Team, and Board of Trustees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Bachelor Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field. Master Degree in Business  Administration or CPA preferred
  • Minimum eight years in a progressively responsible finance role, with experience in non-profit organizations
  • Experience in a managerial role, supervising staff and fostering accountability
  • Experience with ticketing, sales and revenue reporting, and daily cash handling
  • A passion for the Museum and its mission
  • Ability to convey information to people of all ages and backgrounds in a compelling way
  • Open-mindedness: ability to see things from many points of view
  • Ability to develop and adhere to budgets
  • Ability to lead staff and set an example
  • Strategic thinking and creativity
  • Knowledge of financial software and ticketing packages
  • Ability to accomplish goals through collaboration with internal and outsourced relationship.
  • Ability to communicate with the Executive Team and Board of Trustees in an articulate and succinct manner that provides objective evidence of success and vision

SALARY $70,000-$77,000
